When the Heavens Open: Unlocking God's Abundant Power Through Prayer
A missionary Group in China (not referenced in this blog)
Have you ever found yourself in a situation that felt utterly impossible? A problem too big, a need too great, a challenge that seemed to mock your every effort? It's in these moments that we need to be reminded of a profound truth: the God we serve is a God of power, and He is a God who answers prayer.
There was a missionary team, small in number, facing an overwhelming obstacle on an island off the coast of China. The islanders were fiercely devoted to an idol named Ta-wang, convinced of its power because their annual parade, held in its honor, always brought perfect weather. It was their undeniable "proof" that their god was real and powerful. This caused them to be very resistant to these missionaries and there message. Many of them refused to even hear about Jesus Christ, because of their devotion to Ta-wang.
A young, sixteen-year-old boy on the missionary team, with a faith beyond his years, boldly declared to one of the villagers that it would rain on their sacred parade day, January 11th. The young boy believed that if this was the thing that was causing the peopel to put there faith in this idol, then God would make it rain that day to prove to them there was no power in there idol. As you can imagine this sparked outrage and intensified the islanders' resistance.
When the missionary leader heard what the young boy did and recognizing the gravity of the situation, called the mission team to prayer. Their entire mission hinged on it. If it didn't rain, their message would fall on deaf ears.
The morning of January 11th dawned clear and cloudless. Not looking to good. But as 8 AM arrived, a light drizzle began, steadily growing into a downpour. The local priests, desperate to stop the rain, paraded their idol, Ta-wang, hoping to appease it. Yet, the rain intensified, causing the men carrying the idol to stumble and the idol itself to fracture.
The village elders, in their disbelief, rescheduled the parade for the 14th, claiming a mistake in the date. Once again, the missionary team went to their knees, praying for rain on this new day.
The following days were perfectly clear. But on the 14th, at the exact parade time, a torrential downpour unleashed a flood. The power of the idol was undeniably broken. In the aftermath, many on the island turned to Christ.
This incredible account mirrors another powerful story from the Bible, found in the book of Judges. A story about Samson, who was betrayed by his own countrymen and handed over to the Philistines. Bound and outnumbered by a thousand soldiers, Samson, empowered by God, broke free from his bonds. He seized the jawbone of a donkey and, with divine strength, defeated his enemies.
Yet, after such an astounding victory, Samson faced a silent, insidious foe: thirst. Exhausted from battle in the summer heat, he was near death from dehydration. Surrounded by the potential for a renewed attack, Samson did what he knew was his only recourse: he cried out to the Lord in prayer.
And God’s response? Judges 15:19 tells us: "And God split open the hollow place that is at Lehi, and water came out from it. And when he drank, his spirit returned, and he revived." You see God miraculously provided a spring of water, not just for Samson, but a spring that, remarkably, still provides water to this day.
These stories aren't just ancient tales; they are powerful reminders for us today. We may not face 1,000 soldiers or challenge an idol worshipped on an remote island, but we all encounter struggles. Sometimes they're of our own making, sometimes the result of others' actions, and sometimes, they are challenges God allows to draw us closer to Him.
The missionaries couldn't conjure rain, and Samson couldn't make water spring from dry ground. These were impossibilities by human standards. When we neglect prayer, we are, in essence, placing our impossibilities on ourselves. We implicitly declare that God can't handle it, that He doesn't have an answer. But this couldn't be further from the truth!
"For with God nothing will be impossible." (Luke 1:37). God possesses all power and authority. He can do what we cannot. Nothing is too hard for Him.
What's even more striking in both of these accounts is the abundance of God's answer. God didn't just bring a light shower for the missionaries; He brought a flood, not once, but twice, to shatter the idol's hold. God didn't just quench Samson's immediate thirst; He created a lasting spring, a source of refreshment for generations to come.
This echoes the profound truth found in Ephesians 3:20: "Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us." I like that, God is able to do more, abundantly, far more than we can ask, or even think. His ability to answer our prayers is not according to our power but the power of God! That is Huge! God's answers often exceed our expectations, not just to bless us, but to bless many others through us. When God answers your prayer, it might not just be for your benefit, but to reveal His glory to those around you, just as He did for the islanders and those who saw Samson's miraculous refreshment
Practical Applications for Your Life:
- Identify Your "Impossibility": Take time today to honestly acknowledge a situation in your life that feels beyond your control or ability to solve. This could be a relationship struggle, a financial challenge, a health concern, or a decision you need to make. Write it down.
- Bring it to God in Prayer: Once you've identified your "impossibility," intentionally commit to bringing it before God in prayer daily for the next week. Use scripture like Philippians 4:6-7, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God," as a guide.
- Cultivate a Spirit of Expectancy: As you pray, practice believing that God can and will answer, even if His answer looks different from what you expect. Consider keeping a prayer journal to record your requests and God's responses, no matter how big or small. This will build your faith and help you recognize His hand at work.
- Be Ready to Witness and Share: When God answers your prayers, especially those that seemed impossible, be prepared to share your testimony. Just as the islanders witnessed God's power and Samson's provision served as a lasting sign, your answered prayers can be a powerful witness to others of God's faithfulness and power.
What "impossible" situation are you ready to surrender to God in prayer today, trusting in His abundant power?
